Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic composed of alternating ethylene oxide and ketone groups linked by ether bonds. It can be regarded as the “gold plastic in the cutting-edge manufacturing field” - it forms a rigid aromatic main chain through the condensation polymerization of 2,2-difluorodiphenyl ketone and resorcinol at high temperatures, thus possessing extremely high heat resistance (melting point 343°C, long-term use temperature 260°C), excellent mechanical strength (lighter than aluminum yet comparable to steel in rigidity), resistance to chemical corrosion (almost insoluble in any common solvent), natural flame retardancy and low smoke toxicity, as well as excellent radiation resistance and wear resistance. PEEK can be molded by injection, extrusion or 3D printing, and can also be combined with carbon fibers to form ultra-high-performance composite materials. It is widely used in cutting-edge fields such as aerospace (aircraft fasteners, connectors), medical devices (artificial spines, bone screws, dental appliances), semiconductor equipment (wafer carrier rings), and the oil and gas industry, where extreme requirements for heat resistance, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility are present.
